It’s time to celebrate the staple spirit that is vodka. Shockingly, the UK are yet to establish a day dedicated to vodka, therefore, we are momentarily borrowing ‘National Vodka Day’ from the US (just until the UK get their act together).
Vodka, which stems from the Slavic word Voda meaning water, was supposedly first produced in Russia at the end of the 9th Century (although some would object to this as some claim it was in fact first produced in Poland during the the 8th Century). Clearly they held it in high regard with a name like that.
Originally used by our medieval ancestors for medicinal reasons, time has shown us the true value and purpose of this versatile liquid.
These days, vodka is to the spirits market what jeans are to the fashion industry: trusted and essential. The well known and ever popular vodka brand Smirnoff, sells more than 25 million 9 litre cases every year, making it the third highest selling spirit brand in the world.
Due to its relatively flavourless taste, vodka is undoubtedly the most mixable spirit behind the bar. Therefore, it is no surprise that vodka is the most popular liquor choice for cocktails…
Flavoured vodka, or ‘infused liquor’, is a trend which continues to boom with flavours becoming increasingly obscure. Luckily for us this has led to the invention of unique and exciting cocktails by innovative mixologists. Here at The Fizzy Tarté, we have taken it upon ourselves to find the most unusual flavours on the market.
It is clear that vodka has come along way since its humble beginnings as a medicinal disinfectant, and thank goodness it has. Just think, we could be missing out on smoked salmon vodka as we speak! So whether the blame lies with Russia or Poland, here’s to you.
